How to search lecture recordings for the explanation you need
Find a specific concept in recorded lectures with better questions, meaningful timestamps, and a habit of checking the original explanation.

1. Describe the concept you need to recover
Begin with the explanation, not only a phrase you hope the lecturer used. Ask a question that names the concept and the gap in your understanding, such as “Where does the lecturer explain why this sampling method introduces bias?” Add the course, unit, lecturer, or assessment topic if you remember it.
Keep nearby terms ready. A lecturer may say “variance” when you remember “spread,” or “regularization” when you remember “preventing overfitting.” Search the technical term, the plain-language idea, and any acronym separately.
2. Give each recording useful context
Rename or label recordings with the course, lecture number, date, and topic when you can. Store slides, reading PDFs, screenshots, or your own notes alongside the recording if they belong to the same lesson. These clues help distinguish similar explanations across a long term.
Search works best when long recordings are connected to meaningful time segments. A whole two-hour file is hard to review; a result tied to a short timestamp gives you a realistic place to start listening.
3. Search in layers
Use a broad-to-narrow sequence so you do not miss an explanation just because your remembered wording is different:
- Search the whole lecture set for the concept and its plain-language alternatives.
- Narrow by course, date, lecturer, unit, or the problem being solved.
- Search the strongest recording for a distinctive term, example, formula, or question from the class.
If the lecturer explains an idea through an analogy, search the topic around the analogy too. Also try the question a student asked; the answer may be easier to locate through that exchange than through the formal definition.
4. Listen around the timestamp
Do not rely on an isolated transcript snippet. Listen before and after the result so you can hear the assumptions, correction, example, and conclusion. A lecturer may first give an intuitive explanation and then add a limitation that changes how you should apply it.
Save the lecture title, timestamp, slide or page reference, and the question the explanation answers. For exam or professional work, compare it with the assigned reading or primary source. A timestamp makes the teaching moment easy to revisit, but it is not a substitute for understanding the surrounding context.
